My Right Knee Replacement Incision Is Possibly Infected

My recovery has taken a turn for a worse. It is going to take a bit of explaining.

Instead of using stitches or staples to close the incision my surgeon uses a product called DermaBond. It is a 2 part product.

  • A mesh is applied evenly over the incision.
  • Then a variation of Krazy Glue adheres the mesh to the skin

The idea is that a biological barrier is formed. The idea is that no bacteria gets in while this in place. It typically falls off after 3 weeks. It is suppose to reveal an incision. During that 3 week period the patient is able to go about life as normal (including showering without the need to keep the incision dry. Literally water and soap just rolls off the DermaBond.

DermaBond isn't "to good to be true". There is more work involved for the surgeon under the incision. But it is best for the patient. It typically brings a good outcome. The surgeon is motivated to do this for their patients to offer them the best possible recovery from surgery.

My DermaBond dressing started to peel off. It has revealed green pus and a whole where incision scar tissue should be. I already had an appointment with my family doctor for him to cast his eye over my incision. Then either he will assume responsibility for this or more likely will refer me back to my surgeon for treatment after doing the initial step.

Unfortunately I am going to be in for a thoroughly exciting day when I could really do without this.
