Construction Site Pedestrian By Pass Not Wheelchair Accessible

Last night I did some grocery shopping on the way to the gym for my physiotherapy. There is a new building going up in the corner of the grocery store parking lot. A cement baracade has been setup for pedestrian traffic. It doesn't have a transition between the parking lot grade and the sidewalk grade.

I just wrote a letter to the store management asking that they modify this to include it. There are typically two options to provide this transition for wheelchair accessibility:

  • Using ashphalt patch to form the slope. A thick rubber mat is placed over top for wheelchairs to drive over.
  • Forming a ramp using plywood and some 2" x 6" boards cut on an angle to form the transition
