New Sump Pump Installed
[ Tuesday March 26th 2019 at 2:30 pm ]

The old sump pump has been removed and the new one is installed! It is a huge relief that this is done. When I tested it the new sump pump discharges water about 10x faster than the sump pump that was wearing out. The new one is slightly more powerful. It is obvious this needed to be replaced.

I've made some fundamental changes in how the sump pump connects to the discharge drain. I've changed the sump pump discharge drain to use a flexible coupler. Also purchased high end check valves use a flexible couplers. When subsequent sump pumps must be installed the maintenance will be very easy and straight forward. The hard work getting this setup is done.

Additionally I've added a connection for a 2nd sump pump. The second pump is for a 12 volt battery backup. In part this is because this house needs a sump pump. Otherwise the basement floods. The other issue is that I've had 2 sump pumps die without warning. This will bridge the gap when this happens.

I purchased a bilge sump pump and am making my own battery backup. There is 1 more component I need to buy for this. It is a counter to keep track of the DC sump pump cycles. I am going to set this up on the main floor of my home. If the count starts raising quickly I will quickly know the main sump pump isn't working as expected and I will need to assess if it needs replace. Ultimately this is to protect my furnace and hot water tank from failure due to water damage. I'd rather spend $400 now than $8,000 replacing these. This isn't to mention the impact on my life this would create if both were wrecked.
