Delivery Of Metal Rods To Start Modifying The Guinea Pig Cages Into Hamster Cages
[ Thursday February 29th 2024 at 1:36 pm ]

The ⅛" x 36" metal rods I ordered have been delivered. These are for converting guinea pig cages to be suitable for use with a hamster. What I ordered will do all of cage #1 and the bottom floor of cage #2. My plan is to have 3 pet hamsters. I am going to stagger getting these 8 months apart. Then I will likely always have 2 hamsters here with me when the oldest passes away. I find it comforting having a hamster here with me. I enjoy my cuddles and hamster back massages. I talk to my hamsters while I pet them. Also I am a quiet person. I don't make a lot of noise. I appreciate it when a hamster adds some signs of life to my home.

A hamster needs the bars to be every ½". This plays into the hamster's natural behaviour for climbing. The difference with a guinea pig is that it doesn't benefit from the bars being close together or encourage a guinea pig's natural behaviours. Also a hamster has significant less droppings. With the plastic base of a guinea pig cage being deep the paper shavings only need changing once a month. Between the monthly shaving changes it just needs spot cleaning. Each of the 3 cages that I've purchase has an upper and a lower floor. I need to add 16 rows of bars to each section of all 3 cages.

This is a big project. I am anticipating approximately 10,000 welds will be required by the time all 3 cages have been modified. The trade off is that this will last my entire life. It is going to be really great having hamster company here with me with me again. In addition I am really looking forward to live streaming my little buddies. It is going to be great.
