Smoke - Carbon Monoxide Detector Worn Out

Another one of my combo smoke - carbon monoxide detectors wore out. I don't know what to make of this. The packaging says it is designed to last 10 years. A good friend of mine is a licensed electrician. He told me they aren't reliable at 10 years. It doesn't surprise me that the detector assessed it was no longer reliable. The upshot is that I need to get another detector. My friend wants me to consider hiring a home security system to offload the stress of this on me and give the responsibility of maintenance to a home security monitoring company that is responsible for the maintenance of their equipment.
