Roof Underlay For The West Side Is On
[ Saturday October 24th 2020 at 5:11 pm ]

The asphalt shingles have been removed from one side of the roof. The roof is tarped for the night. It is about to rain. It is an exciting milestone. I've been needing to have the roof replaced since October 2019. With this being so close to winter I decided to tarp it. Then we went headlong into covid19. Suddenly it is a year later and the roof really needs to be replaced.

Even though it is common to leave asphalt shingles on when installing a metal roof I want them gone. Having the shingles remain eats into the safety margin of the roof. My asphalt shingles weigh approximately 250 pounds per 100 square feet. With living in Canada I'm all too aware of the snow. In the event of a snow storm there is a risk of the roof collapsing. An individual snow flake has minimal weight. In 2011 peoples decks were collapsing and the building code strengthened. I'm not willing to take the risk.

The key justification I've seen for leaving asphalt shingles on is the cost of disposal. I fail to see how a bill of $150 is prohibitively expensively. This is especially considering the roof is now able to handle an additional 1,000 pounds of snow in the event of a severe storm. My rubberized underlay I'm using weighs 175 pounds. I'm in a really good position to not be concerned with the unknown my health care treatment creates.
