There isn't always going to be a role model to pattern your life after or to gauge if you are on track. Don't under estimate the value of brainstorming and creative thinking in helping build the systems you use in managing your life and solutions for having the best quality of life possible.

Don't under estimate the value of a family doctor. A family doctor is able to be your ally and advocate when requiring specialist care and referrals. Along with your symptoms he or she is able to speak to your attitude and commitment to life. If you are having a hard time expressing yourself consider using a friend as a sounding board to troubleshoot a different way of saying the same thing. When it is necessary ask a social worker for assistance as an intermediary when there has been prolonged tension or misunderstanding.

Not everyong will understand what it is like living with the pain you experience. When someone is asking about this part of your life try to draw parallel experiences the person may relate with. For example a person may understand the pain associated with being accidentally cut by a tin can lid while preparing a meal as a way of expressing sharp pain you are experiencing or being fatigued by pain like a person experiences when competing in a sporting competition.

Consider your needs when booking health care appointments. Book your appointments when you will be at your best (such as late morning or early afternoon). When you are feeling your best it will be easier to express your symptoms and help you remain focused on the real issues at hand and not the frustration or fatigue pain causes. This is to help you get the best help available while articulating your needs and being better understood by your health care team.
